Now on Day 10 of our special Christmas Advent and to Chapter Three of the story:
'During the night it began to snow, hiding the waning moon which shone at its brightest as it grew smaller, the snow clouds were full and covered the sky. As Joe and Neddy slept, the view behind the heavy green curtain was just a white moving swirl of flakes building up on the roofs and on the cars and laying on the window sill outside.
In the living room, the curtain was not pulled across the window and in the strange half light, the little glass snowstorm was resting on top of the Christmas List. Joe's mum had finished it late in the evening and popped it underneath the ball before turning the lights off and going to bed. It had taken her a long time to complete the list, knowing that most things she wanted to buy Joe for Christmas were out of the question. Not unless a miracle happened. At the top of the list was a Christmas tree. But it had to be a real one as Joe had never had a Christmas with all the excitement of bringing a tree home, the fragrant smell of the pine needles, the wonder of decorating it and putting the presents underneath. Pretend trees just didn't have that magic of Christmas about them. Next on the list came Joe's presents. The main one, which was listed as: 'Motorbike from newsagent's shop.' Joe had wanted it for months, ever since first seeing it on a shopping expedition with Grandma. It was a fairly big model motorbike done out in silver with a lot of interesting detail. It came in its own box and was very impressive to a small boy.
Although Joe hadn't particularly asked for one, his mum wanted him to have a train set, and she added this to the list in scribbly writing as if it wasn't worth printing out. After all a train set - where would she find the money for that? The List continued, with other small gifts and items of food and drink but it finished abruptly as if the writer simply could not make the effort to write anymore. And so the List remained for now on top of the television and under the glass ball, where the little tree inside stood in its own snowy world.'
